Background

On any given night in the United States, there are 643,047 people experiencing homelessness. Although many are adults, there are teenagers and children living without a home. 12% of people who find themselves homeless and below the poverty line are veterans. We need to help these people, and these nonprofits and charities help get these homeless people off the streets and back on their feet.

While unemployment rates remain low, more and more people are being forced into homelessness and onto the streets. These poor people need shelter, but beyond a place to sleep, these families are faced with hunger and danger while living on the streets. We need housing for the homeless.

Nonprofits play an important role in helping the homeless, especially homeless families. They may offer services such as job training or rehabilitation. They may offer daycare to enable parents to go looking for jobs or they may even have employment services that help connect employers with these people. Some nonprofits even refurbish old homes for homeless families to temporarily live in.

But while shelters and ministries can provide safety and a place to sleep, they still need your help to make it all possible. Volunteer or donate to a homeless shelter near you or any other charity for the homeless and help get a person off the streets, out of poverty, and on their way to a functional life.

They’re big and global, with budgets exceeding $100 million and net assets of at least $65 million. Yet these 10 charities manage to do exceptional work throughout the country and overseas, all while maintaining stellar financial management and transparency.

Still, before giving to any charity — large or small — it’s important to understand how much of your money actually goes to the cause being supported and how much is earmarked for administrative expenses. “For these larger charities, you want to see at least 75 percent of their budget going to programs and services,” said Sandra Miniutti, vice president of marketing for Charity Navigator, a service that provides information about a charity’s functions, finances and management. It, along with BBB Wise Giving Alliance and Charity Watch, are free to use, although others charge both the site user and the charity to be rated.

It’s also important to note how a charity’s revenue is trending over time. If there are consecutive years of decreases, that could be a red flag.

The following are some of the highest-rated charities, according to Charity Navigator. Their scores — ranked on a scale of 1 to 100 — are based on financial health, accountability and the transparency of reporting.

Top 10 Charities That Should Raise a Red Flag for Donors, top charities.#Top #charities

Teach for America, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation included in BBB WGA’s list

Top charities

WASHINGTON—Today, BBB Wise Giving Alliance (BBB WGA) released a list of the 10 largest charities (ranked by Fiscal Year 2014 total contributions) that failed to disclose any of the requested information needed to verify the charity’s trustworthiness. The list includes recognizable charities, including Teach for America, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. A charity’s failure to disclose important information relevant to BBB WGA evaluation should be a red flag for donors, and the BBB WGA urges donors to avoid charities that dodge transparency.

“Transparency is the mark of a well-run charity,” said H. Art Taylor, CEO and President of BBB WGA. “Failure to disclose important operations information demonstrates a complete disregard to the importance of trust.

“The majority of charities agree to an evaluation, and it’s concerning when charities refuse. Failure to disclose information isn’t just about snubbing the BBB WGA reporting process —these charities are snubbing the people and donors who are asking BBB WGA to verify the charity’s trustworthiness.

“We know that publicly-available financial information is simply not enough for BBB WGA to evaluate a charity’s trustworthiness, which is why we evaluate charities on 20 unique standards that also examine a charity’s governance, results reporting and fund-raising practices, among other issues.”

BBB WGA is releasing its list of top Transparency Dodgers to uncover some of the largest national charities that fail to disclose critical information and underscore the importance of donors researching before they give.

BBB WGA conducts rigorous, comprehensive evaluations on thousands of charities to help donors ensure that the money and time they donate is being spent wisely. To see if your favorite charity is transparent, visit Give.org to check out BBB WGA’s free charity reports.

True and Fair Foundation: Report claims Britain s biggest charities spend less than half

One in five of Britain’s biggest charities spend less than 50 per cent of total income on good works, new report claims

Top charities

By Christopher Hope, Chief Political Correspondent

12:01AM GMT 12 Dec 2015

Some of the UK s biggest and best known charities are spending less than half of their total income every year on good works, a new research has found.

The report from the True and Fair Foundation found that one in five of the country s biggest charities spend less than 50 per cent of their total income on charitable activities.

Some of the charities are some of Britain s best known voluntary organisations such as Cancer Research UK, the Guide Dogs for the Blind and the British Heart Foundation.

Top charitiesRob Wilson Photo: GEOFF PUGH

Rob Wilson (above), the charities minister, said charities had to reassure people and make very clear that the money donated to them will be spent on frontline charitable activities .

He told The Telegraph that they had a duty to eke out every last penny for good causes .

He said: “Giving to charity is one of the greatest expressions of generosity a person can make and it must not be taken for granted.

“It’s incredibly important for charities to be as transparent and accountable as possible – so people can make an informed decision about where their money goes.

The foundation analysed the latest official annual report and accounts of the 5,543 charities.

Its report – “A Hornets’ Nest” published today – found that 1,020 charities were spending less than 50 per cent of their total income on charitable activities.

Spending on charitable activities is defined in accounting rules as all costs incurred by a charity in undertaking activities that further its charitable aims for the benefit of its beneficiaries .

They were obtained by dividing charitable activity spend by their total income, which may include the profits of trading arms, charity shops and publications as well as public donations.

The British Heart Foundation spent an average of just 46 per cent of its income on charitable activities over the past three years.

The Consumers Association which owns the Which? best buy guides spent just 24 per cent of income on good works while Age UK spent just 48 per cent.

Sue Ryder, which runs a network of second hand shops, spent 46 per cent of its annual income on charitable works over the three years. The Royal Horticultural Society spent 60 per cent of its income on charitable activities over the same period.

Many of the charities also receive millions of pounds of public money on top of the cash they raise from individual donors.

Lloyd s Register was found to have spent just 1 per cent of its £1billion income – none of which comes from public donations – on charitable works on average over the past three years.

A spokesman for Sue Ryder said the research was misleading in light of the size of our retail chain and the costs at Sue Ryder compare favourably to many other organisations .

She added: These calculations do not take into consideration the additional benefits that our shops bring to the local community.

A Which? spokesman said: This is a totally misleading representation of our charitable funding.

How much charities spent on charitable activities

Our charitable arm is fully funded by our successful commercial and publishing businesses and spends 100 per cent of the money it receives on charitable activities and investing for the future benefit of consumers.”

A Lloyd s spokesman said: The Lloyd s Register Foundation is not a publicly funded charity, it is funded by the profits from its trading entity, Lloyd s Register Group Ltd.

The confusion comes from accounting requirements which require us to list the total turnover of the trading group (Lloyd s Register Group Ltd) as income whereas in reality the Foundation s income comes from the trading group gift-aiding a proportion of its profits and from investments.

A spokesman for Guide Dogs declined to comment. A source said that the sale of a property last year had had an impact on its income that year.

An Age UK spokesman said the charity had spent nearly 95 per cent of its income on charitable activity taking into account charity and fundraising income and commercial profits.

Martin Miles, Chief Financial Officer at the British Heart Foundation, said the report did not allow for the very different financial profile of running the UK s largest network of charity shops , adding that 78 per cent of its income was spent on life saving research and improving the lives of heart patients.

He said: We are committed to spending every penny that is donated in a way that will offer the greatest benefit to heart patients and over the last 50 years people s donations have funded research that has helped to halve death rates for cardiovascular disease in the UK.

A spokesman for the Royal Horticultural Society claimed that its proportion spent on charitable works and building its reserve investiment fund for future charitable works was 77 per cent.

Top charitiesSir Stephen Bubb. Photo: REX FEATURES

Sir Stephen Bubb, chief executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, said: “This is a flawed and simplistic analysis which arbitrarily defines charitable activity to exclude campaigning.

“Yet campaigning is the lifeblood of the great British charitable tradition. We work to alleviate the symptoms of disease and poverty and to tackle the causes of such. Donors give money for both.

A Charity Commission spokesman said: Donors need to see how charities spend their money. That s why charity accounts are public documents.

“This report has not, however, considered basic information in the charities accounts, which has led to this flawed analysis.

“The Commission has looked at the accounts of the charities named and we would recommend anyone interested in charity finances does the same.

Taken from “A Hornets’ Nest – A review of charitable spending by UK charities”, by the True and Fair Foundation

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article said that the True and Fair Foundation report showed 1,000 charities spent less than half of ‘the cash raised by members of the public’ on good works. We wish to clarify that this proportion related to charities total income. This includes income from trading subsidiaries in addition to donations from the public. Some of the income attributable to these sources is necessary to cover the costs of trading and this can be a significant proportion of the total. When these trading costs are excluded, the proportion of charities expenditure on charitable objects is invariably significantly higher. The article has been amended accordingly.

The Telegraph has published two letters written in response to this article, one from the Chief Executives of six leading charities and another from Sir Stephen Bubb, Chief Executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations

Top 5 Charities to Donate a Car in NY and NYC

Top charities to donate to

The following is a list of the best organizations to donate a car in NY. We focused on providing a list of charities that no only accept vehicle donations, but also support programs that benefit NY and NYC.

Did you know? non-profits that sell your vehicle to support their programs might provide you with a lesser tax deduction than those that use the vehicle to fulfill their mission.

The IRS law states that, $500 or the price at which was sold your vehicle, whichever amount is greater, may be deducted from your tax statements.

  1. American Red Cross in Greater New York
  2. Goodwill NY
  3. Wheels for Wishes
  4. Long Island Cares
  5. Charity Cars

American Red Cross in Greater New York

Make a meaningful impact in NY by donating your vehicle to the car donation program of the American Red Cross. Your support will contribute with the prevention and human treatment during emergencies and may help save lives.

Goodwill NY

To contribute to humanitarian causes, through an organization that already has a very recognizable name and reputation in the industry, one may donate cars in NY through Goodwill. They offer towing at no cost and accept vehicles in any condition.

Consider the fact that the management and selling process of the donated cars is not done by Goodwill, this organization partnered with National Charity Services to make this program possible.

Therefore, for more information, please call National Charity Services at 866-492-2770 to arrange your car donation in NY and contribute to the Goodwill programs.

You may also visit the website of Goodwill to fill their online donation form to initiate the pick-up process. Have your clear title of your car ready with you. After the sale of your vehicle, you will receive your information regarding your claimable tax deduction.

Top charities to donate to

Wheels for Wishes

Through Wheels for Wishes, car donations in NYC can have a positive impact on kids from areas such as the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan.

Call them at 1-855-831-9474

Visit the website Wheelsforwishes.org for more information.

Long Island Cares

Top charities to donate to

You may not know, but your vehicle might also contribute with one of the most important human needs: food. Help New York citizens that are having a hard time going through hunger with one of the most reputable charities in NY: Long Island Cares, providers of emergency food. They claim to feed 283,000 citizens of Long Island, NY every year. Cars, trucks and RVs, running or not; are all accepted vehicles in their car donation program which is managed by Donation Processors of America (DPA), not by the charity itself. Despite this, the program will provide you with everything you need to claim your tax deduction.

Donate a car in NY to this charity by calling: 877-872-2127

Remember to visit the website of Long Island Cares for more information on their organization and other ways you can contribute.

Charity Cars

Remember that most of the car donation programs will sell your vehicle at auction to obtain money to make a positive impact; but how much money will go to the cause you want to contribute to? The truth is most charities pay middlemen to manage the selling of the vehicles they collect. But obviously, you as a donor want to benefit the most, the cause you are most concerned with – and maybe at the same time obtain a worthy tax deduction.

Charity Cars, is a registered 501(C)(3) non-profit that has received the recognition from reputable figures such as Oprah and is one of the best places for car donations in NY, to make a positive impact in its fullest extent and to obtain the best tax deduction possible.

Top charities to donate to

They connect donors such as you, with families across the United States that are currently struggling, such as victims of natural disasters, and need a vehicle for their transportation and to overcome their actual problems.

So this organization removes the middlemen to provide the most benefits for the families in need, what about the benefits regarding tax deductions for the donor?

If your vehicle is donated to, and used by, a struggling family, such as with Charity Cars, you can claim a tax deduction of the full fair market value of the vehicle, according to rules by the IRS. A lot less can be claimed if your car is sold by the non-profit. Use resources such as the website of Kelly Blue Books to know the fair market value of the car you are donating in NY.

Charity Cars even offers their current audited financial statements in their website, a huge plus for any wise philanthropist. For these reasons, this organization tops our list of the best non-profits to make a car donation in NY.

So if you want to donate a car in NY, call Charity Cars at 1-800-CHARITY which stands for 1-800-242-7489 or visit their website here.

They cover the cost of the towing everywhere in the US and accept running or not running cars. Please note that they require a clear title.

Thanks for your contribution, which will help New Yorkers and other Americans improve their lives.

The next step, after selecting your charity, is to learn about tax deductions and how to claim them. Read on the rest of our articles to learn about this important subject for philanthropists, and to become a wiser one.

The worst charities: Get information before you make a donation

Americans give generously. We give more to charity per capita than any other developed nation; more than $200 billion in 2011. But all that money may not be going where we think. The Tampa Bay Times and The Center for Investigative Reporting have released a list of “America’s Worst Charities,” 50 organizations that raised billions of dollars, but gave hardly any of it to the people who need it. In some cases, these charities gave no money at all. Instead, much of the money went to paying fundraising firms — those people who bombard us with calls and direct mail. Kendall Taggart is a data reporter at the Center for Investigative Reporting.

“I think for a lot of these groups that are using outside fundraisers, it’s an easy way to cover their own salaries and there’s very little regulation to making sure that they follow through on the promises that they’ve made to donors,” says Taggart.

Taggart says these charities provide help to the causes they are supposed to support with what’s called “gifts in kind” — things like medical supplies that they ship overseas. The problem is that there’s no way to verify the value of those goods, so they can be used to inflate a charity’s revenue on the books and what it looks like they’re doing in terms of programs.

“The top of our list is an organization called Kid’s Wish Network. They operate out of a metal warehouse in Holiday, Fla. Over the past decade they’ve raised millions of dollars. Of that, about 80 percent — $110 million — has gone to professional solicitors, $4.8 million has gone to the charity’s founder and his consulting firm, and only $0.03 of every $1 that they’ve raised has actually spent directly on helping kids,” says Taggart. “Most of the causes are popular causes that appeal to donors and may sound like a more well-known group.”

To make sure that you’re sending your money to good places, Taggart says there are many resources to research cahrities online.

The top 10 worst U.S. charities:

Top charities to donate to

Want to evaluate a charity you want to donate to? Check out these helpful websites:

“Some basic steps that people can take if they get a phone call at home is to find out exactly who’s calling, where their donation will go, what they’ll do with your money and, if you get a call, know that there’s a cost and they — if you ask — need to tell you what that cost is, whether the telemarketer is going to take $0.80 or $0.90 or that kind of thing,” says Taggart.

She says you should ask the question: “How much of my donation is going to go to the charity versus your professional firm?” One last piece of advice: some watchdog groups say that if you receive a phone call asking for a donation, you should hang up; the best way to make sure that your money is going where you want it to go is to give directly.
