A Look at Automobile Charitable Donations and Alternative Ways to Get Rid of a Vehicle

Do you own an unwanted vehicle? Or maybe a boat that just sits in your driveway and never gets used? Did you know that you can donate it to charity and get a federal tax deduction?

In 2011, American charities received 298.3 billion dollars in donations and charitable giving. One of the popular revenue streams for charitable organizations is vehicle donation programs. VehicleDonationProgram.org offers listings of accredited auto donation charities throughout the USA as well as information about how to sell your vehicle for cash, so you can make an informed decision.

The Type of Vehicles that are Eligible for Donation

Most charities will accept almost any vehicle, regardless of whether or not it is working condition.

The Most Common Types of Vehicles Accepted for Donation:

  • Cars
  • Vans
  • Pickup Trucks
  • RVs and Campers
  • Boats
  • Trailers
  • ATVs
  • Helicopters and Airplanes

A Look at the Pros and Cons of Donating an Automobile to Charity

Every year, hundreds of thousands of vehicles are itemized as charitable donations to local charities. There are several benefits involved in the auto donation process, but there are also some pitfalls to watch out for. Below are some talking points to consider before making you decision.

The Advantages of Donating a Vehicle to Charity:

  • The donor gets a tax break: When you turn in your vehicle to the charity, they will provide you with the necessary tax forms, including IRS Tax Form 1098-C : The Written Acknowledgement of Vehicle Contribution. Several factors will determine the exact amount of deduction you will eligible for, but the figures are usually 10 – 15 percent less than the fair market value of the vehicle. Also, if the fair market value of your vehicle is greater than $5000, you must have it independently appraised before you donate it. Depending on your income tax bracket, choosing to donate rather than sell your unwanted automobile can be a good idea. Research The Fair Market Value of Your Car
  • The money stays in the community: In most cases, the proceeds that the charity receives from the sale or use of the vehicle are used to directly assist people in need within the community. Rather than selling the cars at auction, some charities will refurbish them and give them to needy families in the community.
  • You don’t have to go through the hassle of selling your used car: When you donate to a reputable organization, they will make the donation process virtually hassle-free. In most cases, you simply contact the charity and schedule a pick-up time. They will have their towing service haul-away the automobile and the proper tax paperwork will be mailed to you within approximately 2 weeks of the donation date. It’s basically as simple as that.

The Disadvantages of Donating your Vehicle to Charity

  • Car Donation Scams: Always research the charity that you are considering donating to. In order to get a tax deduction, the charity must be officially classified as a 501(c)3 Organization. Misleading schemes and scam artists that claim to be a charitable organization are prevalent throughout the USA. Usually, these individuals are actually junk car dealers that will promise to tow away the vehicle for free and mail you the paperwork. Unfortunately, in many cases, they don’t honor their promises. Here is a list of the top-rated charities to consider: Directory of Approved Automobile Donation Centers
  • The amount of the deduction: Your deduction amount may not be as much as you anticipate. According to IRS Regulations on Car and Vehicle Donation, if the value of the donated vehicle exceeds $500, there are specific rules that you must follow. In most situations, the amount you can deduct on your taxes is not the fair market value, but rather it is the amount that the charity sells your car for at auction.
  • Not all of the money actually goes to the charity: For logistical reasons, some charities will contract with a third-party operator, such as a scrap yard service, to run the donation program and handle the towing and haul-away services. In these situations, the charity will split the profit of the donation with the third-party. This often results in roughly 50% of the gross revenue actually ending up in the charity’s hands. Before you donate your car, contact the local charities in your area.
    • Research the Operating Efficiency Ratings of Charities
    • Read the FAQ’s About the Car Donation Process

Reasons to Sell Your Unwanted Car for Cash

In most parts of the country, there is a large demand for salvaged or “junk” cars. Since they are not bound by charity-specific IRS regulations, automobile recyclers and junkyards are more accommodating to the condition of the vehicle as compared to charitable organizations. According to the Automotive Recyclers Association, over 4.7 million vehicles were recycled in 1997, and it is a robust and growing business. For this reason, junk car buyers will often pay cash on the spot for any type of automobile in any condition. This includes:

    • cars involved in a collision
    • old, rusted out vehicles
    • flood damaged cars
    • project cars

Even if the car is wrecked or rusted out, it still has an intrinsic value. For cars that are severely damaged, the functioning auto parts will be stripped out and sold off. The rest of the vehicle is usually sold to a scrap metal wholesaler who can recycle the steel. Automobiles are the #1 most recycled consumer good in the USA. Recycling steel is not only good for the environment, it provides a lot of American jobs.

For cars that still run, they can be refurbished to a roadworthy condition and sold for a profit. There are several junk car and salvage car dealers that operate under this business model.

Things You Must Do Before Selling or Donating Your Vehicle:

Regardless of whether you choose to sell your vehicle or donate to a local organization, there are a few steps to take beforehand:

    • You must have a clear title: In the vast majority of situations, you must possess a free and clear title to the vehicle you are getting rid of. If you have lost your title paperwork, you should contact your local DMV office to obtain a copy. If you own a car that was involved in a serious accident or is inoperable, you may need to file for a salvage title. For example, in the state of Colorado, if you own an automobile that needs repairs costing in excess of the fair market value of the vehicle, you must submit the Colorado Application for Automotive Salvage Title.
    • Be sure to remove the license plate: Don’t forget to remove the license plate from the vehicle. You can either re-use it on your next vehicle or return it to your local DMV center.
    • Remove any valuables: Check the glove box, the trunk, and under the seats. You want to remove all documents and look for valuables that you may have forgotten about such as jewelry, spare change, or personal electronics.
    Conclusion

Getting rid of an unwanted automobile or other vehicle is usually a win-win situation. Not only do you to free up some extra garage or driveway space, you are putting some extra money in your pocket. And, if you decide to donate to charity, you also get the satisfaction of helping others along the way.

APEC s FreeDrinkingWater Charity Donation Program #church #donation

    #water donation

    #

At APEC, our greatest joy comes from the knowledge that our systems are protecting the health of people and their families. It is our belief that drinking water is a key component to health and that everyone should have access to clean water. People who are sick and are undergoing medical treatment in particular, need ultra-pure water to protect their compromised immune systems from the chemicals and toxins found in tap water. Cancer patients for instance, need to drink plenty of water to protect their bodies from harsh chemotherapy treatments. Unfortunately, many people cannot afford a quality water filtration system even though they desperately need it. We want to help change that.

Through our new Free Drinking Water charity program, APEC is looking to donate several drinking water filtration systems a month to individuals who have a health concern. We are looking to help people who are lower income and have an existing medical condition that would benefit from drinking purified water. If you or someone you know qualifies. please complete the following application and submit it to us for consideration. We will select several individuals and families every month to receive a free system based on demand, qualification and necessity. This charity program is open to all residences within the 48 contiguous United States.

    Water Nurtures, Health Blooms,
    Hope Springs Eternal

It has long been a dream of ours to be able to offer this type of program, and we are very grateful to be in a position to help those who are in need. The support of our customers has made this possible and we humbly offer this program in their honor. We believe that water has the power to soothe, rejuvenate and heal the human body and spirit. May the benefits of clean water always grace those who are most in need of it.

    ROES-50 Reverse Osmosis System

The ROES-50 is an under-the-counter water purification system that needs to be installed and hard-plumbed under your kitchen sink. The unit comes with its own faucet and holding tank and is fully automated. It is recommended for people who are fairly handy and have the manual dexterity to install a water system themselves. Otherwise a plumber may be needed.

The ROES-50 is the ideal system for people who live in their own homes and do not frequently move or relocate.

    RO-CTOP Reverse Osmosis System

The RO-CTOP is a countertop system that can be easily connected to your existing kitchen faucet. This unit can be quickly setup or removed from any faucet and is lightweight portable. It does not come with a faucet or tank and purified water must be collected in a separate container or pitcher by the user. This system does not require installation and is recommended for people who cannot install an under-counter system.

The RO-CTOP is the ideal system for people who are renting or move frequently and need a convenient portable system.

We want to help in any way possible. If you are unable to open the application forms from the links above, please e-mail us with your contact information at and we can fax, or mail out a hard copy of the form to you. You can also use the quick request form below to contact us.

    QUICK APPLICATION FORM REQUEST:

Privacy Policy – Your personal information will be kept strictly confidential and will never be shared with any third parties.

APEC Donations to Organizations and Charities

We have had the honor and privilege of working with several non-profit organizations to provide commercial water filtration systems to communities in need. From a small fishing town in Ecuador, to a mountain village in China, from a ministry program in the Philippines, to the victims in the 2010 Haiti earthquake, APEC RO systems have been providing clean drinking water to thousands of people around the world for many years. Donating a system is easy, however dedicating your life to the betterment of entire communities far from home is not. We are truly indebted to our charity partners, without which none of this would have been possible. Thank you all!

State Anatomical Program: Donating Your Body to Science

You give many gifts in your lifetime but there is one special gift that will make a significant and lasting contribution: the gift of donating your body to medical science through the Virginia Department of Health’s State Anatomical Program.

Donation is a gift of education to the many hundreds of doctors, nurses and other health professionals studying in Virginia s medical schools, colleges and universities who must learn how the human body is constructed before they can successfully treat living patients. No models, films or books can substitute for the actual study of the human body itself.

VDH s State Anatomical Program is the only entity in Virginia authorized to receive donations of human bodies for scientific study. The primary mission of the State Anatomical Program is to educate health professionals providing human donors for the teaching of anatomy and surgery and for medical research.

Every Virginian has the opportunity to make a valuable and generous gift to the living – the gift of his or her body after death for study and research in medical science.

IVF Egg Donor Program Information – About the Egg Donation Procedure

Infertile couples often live through years of heartache, undergoing one fertility treatment after another in an effort to experience the miracle of childbirth. The egg donation procedure can help these couples to realize their dream with the help of a generous IVF egg donor and the dedicated fertility team at the Center for Assisted Reproduction.

If you have been thinking about becoming involved in our IVF egg donor program, you probably have many questions about the egg donation procedure and whether you might be a good egg donation candidate. Dr. Kathleen Doody and the other doctors at our fertility center want prospective egg donors to understand the commitment required to complete the egg donation procedure, as well as the rewards of making such a significant contribution to another family. Read more about the reasons women like you have chosen to donate eggs.

The IVF egg donor program at the Center for Assisted Reproduction, directed by Dr. Kathleen Doody, begins with a comprehensive medical and psychological screening of each prospective donor. To be included in the egg donor database. you must be under the age of 32 with no prior history of infertility. You should be a healthy nonsmoker with no family history of genetic defects or congenital illnesses.

After a recipient couple has chosen you based on the information in your profile, you will be asked to complete screening for various infectious diseases and if applicable, any ethnically-related illnesses such as Cystic Fibrosis, Tay-Sachs or sickle cell disease. The egg donation procedure begins with a regimen of hormones that are administered to you daily at the Center over a period of 10 to 14 days. The process ends with the removal of several mature eggs from your ovaries at the Center for Assisted Reproduction. Read more about the process of donating under the egg donor program.

The decision to become an egg donor should not be made lightly. Because of the hormone therapy and frequent office visits required, you should make sure that your other commitments can be rescheduled in the event that you are selected as an IVF egg donor. Once a couple has selected your eggs for conception, your treatment will take at least two months depending on the synchronization schedule set for you and the recipient. Read more about the questions commonly asked by prospective egg donors.

To learn more about the requirements and rewards of becoming an IVF egg donor, contact the program coordinators at the Center for Assisted Reproduction. We can answer your questions and give you all the information you need to determine whether egg donation is the right choice for you.

Car Donation Program FAQ #charity #fund

    #vva donations

    #

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the VVA Car Donation Program?

The Vietnam Veterans of America’s (VVA) Car Donation Program is a program whereby donors may donate vehicles to the VVA and in turn may be eligible to take a charitable tax deduction on their income tax returns. VVA in turn converts your car donation into cash to assist very deserving veterans and their families through the many quality programs provided by the VVA.

    Is my car donation tax-deductible?

Yes. VVA is a 501(c)(19) organization and has been approved by the IRS to receive donated items and issue a tax deductible donation receipt for the item. Therefore, your car donation may be 100% tax deductible based upon your personal tax situation. Please check with your tax advisor if you need more information.

How does my tax deduction work?

You, the donor, determine the Fair Market Value of your vehicle up to $500. If the vehicle sells for more than $500, we will send you an IRS Form 1098-C showing the higher selling price in which you may claim as your tax deduction when filing your taxes.

    What can I donate?

VVA accepts all vehicle donations, and in most cases, we also accepts boats, motorcycles, RV’s, campers and property. We accept non running and running cars. We offer free towing pickup services. We accept cars, trucks, vans, conversion vans, trailers and golf carts.

What do I need to donate my vehicle?

All you need is a title, free of all liens. We will request some general information from you at the time of donation such as, the year, make, and model of the car, as well as its general mechanical condition.

How long will it take to pick up my vehicle?

All vehicles are picked up in a timely and professional manner, usually within 24-48 hours. A local towing company will call you to schedule a pick-up date that is convenient for you.

“Never again will one generation of
    Vietnam Veterans abandon another.”

My vehicle has not run in years. May I still donate it to VVA?

Yes. VVA accepts all vehicles, running or non-running, and will pick-up the vehicle at no cost to you.

What happens to my vehicle after I donate?

Your vehicle is sold at the highest possible value and the title will be transferred out of your name according to state law.

Do you accept car donations nationwide?

We accept car donations in every city in all 50 states .

How can I contact you to schedule a pick-up?

Please call our toll free number at 1-800-Help-Vets
(435-7838) or you may donate online by using our online car donation form .

I do not have a car to donate, but I would like to support VVA.

If you cannot donate your car but would like to extend help to our veterans, we would greatly appreciate monetary support. Please click here to donate a financial gift through the Vietnam Veterans of America website.

National Cord Blood Program #donate #water

    #cord blood donation

    #

Welcome to the New York Blood Center’s National Cord Blood Program Website – an interactive, informational resource for patients, their families and caregivers, health care professionals, expectant parents and the general public.

NYBC’s Howard P.Milstein Cord Blood Center (supported by the Howard and Abby Milstein Foundation) and its National Cord Blood Program (NCBP) is the world’s first and largest single public cord blood bank. We collect, process, test and store cord blood that mothers donate to us for patients in need for a hematopoietic stem cell transplant. Our Program makes cord blood available – either as a product (HEMACORD ) licensed by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or under an Investigational New Drug (IND) exemption from the FDA – for children and adults who face a life-threatening illness and need stem cell transplants from unrelated donors. NYBC’s NCBP was also the first public cord blood bank in the world to receive NetCord-FACT accreditation (June 2003). Click here for more information on NetCord-FACT accreditation. The NetCord-FACT Accreditation was last renewed on February 9th, 2015.

The Food and Drug Administration granted the National Cord Blood Program an Investigational New Drug (IND) exemption in 1996, making us the first cord blood bank to obtain such an exemption. To achieve and maintain this status, we applied voluntarily, submitted our policies and protocols to the FDA and have provided annual reports on our program and on the results of transplants using cord blood units from our bank. As a result of the FDA requirement for a specific clinical protocol, we amended our banking IND by expanding it with a Clinical Protocol accepted by the FDA. We are currently increasing the number of participating Transplant Centers. A different and more detailed application was submitted to the FDA in January 2011 for licensure of our cord blood units and processes. The application and our product, HEMACORD , were approved on November 10th, 2011. This is the first time ever that the FDA has licensed a stem cell product (Press release: FDA. PR Newswire ). HEMACORD , the First FDA-Licensed stem cell product, was awarded the prestigious Best Biotechnology Product Award by Prix Galien USA. in October 2014. The award recognizes biomedical products that advance the human condition and which were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during the past five years, according to the Galien Foundation (Press release ).

The FDA considers cord blood to be a “biological” product. Cord blood units that meet all the prescribed FDA cGMP criteria and process requirements can be licensed (as the HEMACORD products are). Unlicensed cord blood units are considered “investigational” products, which can only be used for human transplantation under an active FDA IND (such as NCBP IND), but their use requires review by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) and particular patient and physician approval, which must be documented on IRB-approved informed consent forms.

From the regulatory perspective, the donors of cord blood (the mothers who donate their newborn’s cord blood) and the patients who receive investigational cord blood transplants are “human research subjects” under FDA and Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP). For this reason, since 1996, we collect cord blood following protocols, policies and procedures submitted to the FDA and formally accepted by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of the New York Blood Center as well as by the IRB of each of the hospitals that collaborate with us as collection centers.

To date, cord blood donations from more than 60,000 mothers have been made to the NYBC’s National Cord Blood Program. Our donors come from all ethnic backgrounds. For example, approximately 20% of the donors are African-American (having at least one African-American parent). Asians represent approximately 8% of all donors and multi-race donors make up 13-15%. Donors of Hispanic ancestry represent 21%. This ethnic diversity has made it possible for patients of different ethnic backgrounds to find suitable matches, thereby improving access to hematopoietic transplantation. [See: See: Why is cord blood important for ethnic minorities? ].

Cord blood from unrelated donors has been used as an alternative to bone marrow or mobilized stem cells as a source of hematopoietic stem cells for more than 20 years. There have been more than 35,000 cord blood transplants performed worldwide so far. In the United States, more than one half of all stem cell transplants from unrelated donors in children now use cord blood. In Japan, this is true for adults as well. Our program has provided over 5,300 cord blood units for transplantation, thus far (more than one seventh of all units transplanted from unrelated donors). Most patients were affected by leukemia, lymphoma, severe aplastic anemia, other lethal diseases of the blood or immune system or certain inherited metabolic diseases [See: Patients Outcomes for a listing of all diseases treated thus far].

When considering a transplant, the transplant physician is responsible for assessing whether his/her patient needs a hematopoietic stem cell transplant and if so, for choosing the most appropriate source of those stem cellscord blood, bone marrow or mobilized stem cells. When matched cord blood units from our bank are being considered for a transplant, we work with the transplant physician to help select the most appropriate unit (based, in part, on what we have learned from the reports transplant centers send to us on their patients who have already received cord blood units from our Program). The physician, however, makes the final decision with the patient or, in the case of a minor, with the family.

This Website attempts to provide accurate and timely information about cord blood transplants and public donations, as well as about technical aspects of our Program’s operations. Patients and families considering a possible transplant must be told that other than cord blood units licensed by FDA, all units must be distributed as investigational products. They can read about the potential advantages and disadvantages of cord blood transplantation in Cord Blood Q A and in a Comparison between Bone Marrow Cord Blood. Encouraging Patient Stories can be found in the Patients Outcomes section. Website visitors can find out how the NCBP works in Program Overview. More technical information about cord blood collection and processing can be found in NCBP at Work.

Expectant parents can get useful information about donation from Cord Blood Donation. You can keep current with News Articles. You can use the new SiteMap to help navigate the site.
