Blood Facts and Statistics

Facts about blood needs

  • Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
  • Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.
  • Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S.
  • Nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.
  • The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.
  • The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O.
  • The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.
  • It is estimated that sickle cell disease affects 90,000 to 100,000 people in the U.S. About 1,000 babies are born with the disease each year. Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives.
  • More than 1.68 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2016. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.
  • A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

For more information about national blood collection and utilization trends, visit the AABB website. AABB is an international, not-for-profit association representing individuals and institutions involved in the field of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies.

Facts about the blood supply

  • The number of whole blood and red blood cell units collected in the U.S. in a year: 13.6 million
  • The number of blood donors in the U.S. in a year: 6.8 million
  • Although an estimated 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood at any given time, less than 10% of that eligible population actually do each year.
  • Blood cannot be manufactured it can only come from generous donors.
  • Type O negative blood (red cells) can be transfused to patients of all blood types. It is always in great demand and often in short supply.
  • Type AB positive plasma can be transfused to patients of all other blood types. AB plasma is also usually in short supply.

For more information about national blood collection and utilization trends, visit the AABB website. AABB is an international, not-for-profit association representing individuals and institutions involved in the field of transfusion medicine and cellular therapies.

Facts about the blood donation process

  • Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded.
  • Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation and refreshments.
  • Every blood donor is given a mini-physical, checking the donor s temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure it is safe for the donor to give blood.
  • The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 minutes.Donors may save time by completing a RapidPass on the day of their donation prior to arriving at the blood drive.
  • The average adult has about 10 pints of blood in his body. Roughly 1 pint is given during a donation.
  • A healthy donor may donate red blood cells every 56 days, or double red cells every 112 days.
  • A healthy donor may donate platelets as few as 7 days apart, but a maximum of 24 times a year.
  • All donated blood is tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and other infectious diseases before it can be released to hospitals.
  • Information you give to the American Red Cross during the donation process is confidential. It may not be released without your permission except as directed by law.

Facts about blood and its components

  • There are four types of transfusable products that can be derived from blood: red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. Typically, two or three of these are produced from a pint of donated whole blood.
  • A single donation can potentially help more than one patient.
  • Donors can give either whole blood or specific blood components only. The process of donating specific blood components red cells, plasma or platelets is called apheresis.
  • One transfusion dose of platelets can be obtained through one apheresis donation of platelets or by combining the platelets derived from five whole blood donations.
  • Most donated red blood cells must be used within 42 days of collection.
  • Donated platelets must be used within five days of collection new donations are constantly needed.
  • Plasma and cryoprecipitate are stored in frozen state and can be used for up to one year after collection.
  • Healthy bone marrow makes a constant supply of red cells, plasma and platelets. The body will replenish the elements given during a blood donation some in a matter of hours and others in a matter of weeks.

Facts about donors

  • The number one reason donors say they give blood is because they want to help others.
  • Two most common reasons cited by people who don t give blood are: Never thought about it and I don t like needles.
  • Half of Red Cross donors male, and half are female.
  • The Red Cross only accepts blood donations from volunteer donors.
  • Among Red Cross donors in a given year, 24 percent donate occasionally, 26 percent are first-time donors, and 50 percent are regular, loyal donors.
  • Only 7 percent of people in the U.S. have type O negative blood. Type O negative donors are universal red cell donors as their blood can be given to people of all blood types.
  • Type O negative blood is needed in emergencies before the patient s blood type is known and with newborns who need blood.
  • Forty-eight percent of people in the U.S. have type O (positive or negative) blood. This percentage is higher among Hispanics 57 percent, and among African Americans 51 percent.
  • Only 3 percent of people in the U.S. have AB positive blood type. AB positive type blood donors are universal donors of plasma, which is often used in emergencies, for newborns and for patients requiring massive transfusions.

Facts about American Red Cross Blood Services

  • The American Red Cross blood program started in 1940, under the leadership of Dr. Charles Drew.
  • The Red Cross supplies about 40 percent of the nation s blood supply.
  • The Red Cross provides blood for patients in approximately 2,600 hospitals across the U.S.
  • The Red Cross makes blood available to any patient who needs it patients are not required to find donors to replace the blood they use (a practice common in Europe and some U.S. blood banks) allowing the patient and their family to focus on recovery.
  • Eighty percent of the blood donations given to the Red Cross are collected at mobile blood drives set up at community organizations, companies, high schools, colleges, places of worship or military installations. The remaining 20 percent are collected at Red Cross donation centers.
  • The Red Cross works with more than 58,000 blood drive sponsors each year to hold more than 145,000 blood drives, providing convenient locations for people to give blood.

Donate Toys, Games and Supplies to Child Life

We appreciate your interest in supporting the children at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as well as the Child Life, Education and Creative Arts Therapy. Because thousands of children visit our many facilities each year, we have an ongoing need for new toys, craft supplies, books, video games and movies.

For the safety of all patients, all donations must be new and safe (non-toxic). Our wish list provides information about what kinds of toys/materials we are most in need of at any given time; however, infant toys and adolescent activities are always needed. If you have gently used toys or stuffed animals to donate, local shelters and churches are often in need of such items.

    Toy donation

The items on our toy donation wish list are most appropriate and entertaining for children while they are hospitalized. Provide comfort to our patients during the holidays and throughout the year by donating new toys, games, gift cards and other supplies. Durable, manageable-sized toys are most helpful.

    • For infection control reasons, we cannot accept used toys and discourage donation of toys made of fabric or wood.
    • Because many of our patients are infants and adolescents, the wish list reflects the greatest need for these play items.
    • Donated toys are given to patients during the holidays and on birthdays, and are also used in our playrooms and patient rooms throughout the year.
    • $25 gift cards to Amazon.com, Target, Walmart, and iTunes allow for gifts and/or the ability to purchase needed items for patients throughout the year and are greatly appreciated.
    • We also accept sporting event ticket donations. Call Child Life at 215-590-2001 if you’d like to donate tickets.

    Deliver your donation

To deliver your donation, please come to the front entrance of the Main Hospital at 34th and Civic Center Blvd. Signs will be posted to direct you to the drop off area.

    • We accept donations every day of the week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

    Fabric donations

If your organization is planning on donating cloth/fabric items, please adhere to the following guidelines:

    • All donated cloth or fabric items (blankets, quilts, knitted hats) should be washed and dried completely prior to donation. Complete drying is very important. Damp items can promote growth of germs. A home washing machine and dryer are adequate.
    • Once dried, items should be individually wrapped or packaged in a zip lock plastic bag. This keeps items from collecting dust and other allergens.

Most donations can be dropped off at the Information Desk in the Main Building between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. seven days a week. To ensure proper follow up and acknowledgement of your donation, please complete a donor form when you deliver your donation to the Information Desk. For larger donations, special arrangements may need to be made with the Child Life, Education and Creative Arts Therapy staff.

    Monetary donation

To make a monetary donation, please call The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation at 267-426-6500 or make a donation online .

    Collection drives

Collection drives can be a great way for groups to get involved in helping others. If you are interested in holding a collection drive for the Child Life, Education and Creative Arts Therapy, we are in need of coloring books, crayons, markers, glue sticks, children’s scissors, small bubbles, small Lego kits and small containers of Play Doh. Thank you very much for thinking of us.

These guidelines can help you plan a successful collection drive:

Diagnosing Diabetes and Learning About Prediabetes

Random (also called Casual) Plasma Glucose Test

This test is a blood check at any time of the day when you have severe diabetes symptoms.

    • Diabetes is diagnosed at blood glucose of greater than or equal to 200 mg/dl

    What is Prediabetes?

Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have “prediabetes” blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

Doctors sometimes refer to prediabetes as impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFG), depending on what test was used when it was detected. This condition puts you at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

    No Clear Symptoms

There are no clear symptoms of prediabetes, so, you may have it and not know it.

Some people with prediabetes may have some of the symptoms of diabetes or even problems from diabetes already. You usually find out that you have prediabetes when being tested for diabetes.

If you have prediabetes, you should be checked for type 2 diabetes every one to two years.

    Results indicating prediabetes are:

    • An A1C of 5.7% 6.4%
    • Fasting blood glucose of 100 125 mg/dl
    • An OGTT 2 hour blood glucose of 140 mg/dl 199 mg/dl

    Preventing Type 2 Diabetes

You will not develop type 2 diabetes automatically if you have prediabetes. For some people with prediabetes, early treatment can actually return blood glucose levels to the normal range.

Research shows that you can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes by 58% by:

    • Losing 7% of your body weight (or 15 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds)
    • Exercising moderately (such as brisk walking) 30 minutes a day, five days a week

Don’t worry if you can’t get to your ideal body weight. Losing even 10 to 15 pounds can make a huge difference.
