A. A living kidney donor is usually between ages 18 to 65 and in excellent health. Donors over age 65 are considered on a case by case basis. A. A history of heart disease, chronic lung or liver disease, kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer or untreated psychiatric disease is usually a contraindication to donating (i.e. the donor candidate is ruled out ). Smoking, obesity and other health issues are considered on an individual basis.

Q. What does kidney transplant surgery involve?

A. The surgical procedure to remove a kidney from the donor is called a donor nephrectomy and takes approximately 2-3 hours. Surgeons primarily use a minimally invasive technique, using 3 small incisions to insert instruments and a slightly larger incision (

8 cm in length) to remove the donor’s kidney. Typically donors spend 2-3 days in recovery before being discharged from the hospital.

A. Once a living donor candidate has been completely evaluated and cleared, the chance of the donation affecting his/her lifespan or lifestyle is extremely low. With any surgery and anesthesia, however, there are risks. Nationally, the risk of having a life-threatening problem with donating a kidney is 1 in 3,000. The risk of minor complications such as a minor wound infection is about 2-4%.

A. Because the kidney donor operation is a major surgical procedure, donors find they have less energy and need about 4-6 weeks to return to their full pre-surgical activity level. A. The New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association published long-term studies in 2009 and 2010 analyzing outcomes of kidney donors. One study followed 80,000 live kidney donors dating back to 1994, while the other studied 3,698 individuals who donated a kidney between 1963 and 2007. Results showed:

Why You Probably Can’t Donate a Kidney Even If You Want To

When it comes to kidney donation, deciding you want to go through with it is actually the easy part. Most Americans couldn t donate a kidney even if they wanted to, finds a new study presented at the American Society of Nephrology s Kidney Week conference in Philadelphia.

Dr. Anthony Bleyer, professor of internal medicine at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and his son Anthony Bleyer, Jr., an economics major at Wake Forest University, looked at data from a representative sample of 7,000 U.S. adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey survey. They discovered that a full 55% of the U.S. population would be ineligible to donate a kidney because of medical conditions most of them preventable. Based on the criteria the Bleyers used, 15% of adults would be excluded due to obesity, 19% to hypertension, 12% to excessive alcohol use and 12% to diabetes.

That s not necessarily because a medical condition has rendered the organs damaged. Our number one thing is we want to preserve the health of the donor, says Dr. Bleyer. The donors have to be in really pristine condition.

The more you weigh, the more strain you ll put on your remaining kidney, and obese people also have a higher risk of complications after surgery and wounds that heal more slowly, he says.

The Bleyer team also looked at how financial concerns might prevent donation. Because kidney donors don t receive compensation for lost work time in the U.S., 36% of healthy, medically eligible people make less than $35,000 per year, so they probably couldn t afford to donate, the study found.

Only 6% of patients who need a transplant get a living-donor kidney transplant, Dr. Bleyer says.

That might not be because people are getting more stingy about their organs but poorer and sicker instead.

    You Must Follow the Rules to Get That Tax Deduction

    It’s easy to donate a car to charity if all you want to do is get rid of it. Simply call a charity that accepts old vehicles and it will tow your heap away. But if you want to maximize your tax benefits, it’s more complicated. Here’s a walk-through of some of the considerations, with the usual proviso that you should discuss these issues with your tax preparer before you act.

    You Must Itemize Your Return

    If you want to claim a car donation to reduce your federal income taxes, you must itemize deductions. You could itemize even if the donated auto is your only deduction, but that’s usually not the best choice.

    Here’s the math: Suppose you’re in the 28 percent tax bracket and the allowable deduction for the vehicle’s donation is $1,000. That will save you $280 in taxes. If you’re in the 15 percent tax bracket and you get that same $1,000 deduction, it will reduce your taxes by $150.

    If the car donation is your only deduction, it’s likely that taking a standard deduction would save you thousands more dollars in taxes. The only way that donating a car nets you any tax benefit is if you have many deductions and if their total, including the car, exceeds the standard deduction. And remember, you can always donate as much as you want to charities, but the IRS limits how much you can claim on your tax return.

    The Charity Must Qualify

    Only donations to qualified charities can provide a tax deduction for you. A qualified charity is one that the IRS recognizes as a 501(c)(3) organization. Religious organizations are a special case. They do count as qualified organizations, but they aren’t required to file for 501(c)(3) status.

    To help you determine whether a charity is qualified, the easiest thing to do is to use the IRS exempt organizations site, or call the IRS toll-free number: 877-829-5500.

    A Key Concept: Fair Market Value

    The IRS defines fair market value as “the price a willing buyer would pay and a willing seller would accept for the vehicle, when neither party is compelled to buy or sell and both parties have reasonable knowledge of the relevant facts.” In this scenario, neither the buyer nor the seller can be an auto dealer. Both must be private parties.

    What complicates the matter for taxpayers is that under current IRS rules, you can only deduct a vehicle’s fair market value under four very specific conditions:

    1. When a charity auctions your car for $500 or less, you can claim either the fair market value or $500, whichever is less.

    2. When the charity intends to make “significant intervening use of the vehicle.” This means the charity will use the car in its work.

    3. When the charity intends to make a “material improvement” to the vehicle, not just routine maintenance.

    4. When the charity gives or sells the vehicle to a needy individual at a price significantly below fair market value.

    Determining Fair Market Value

    Edmunds can help you determine your vehicle’s fair market value with its Appraise Your Car calculator. Enter the car’s year, make and model, as well as such information as trim level, mileage and condition. By looking at the private-party value, you’ll get an accurate idea of what your vehicle is worth.

    Note the caution from IRS Publication 4303: “If you use a vehicle pricing guide to determine fair market value, be sure that the sales price listed is for a vehicle that is the same make, model and year, sold in the same condition, and with the same or substantially similar options or accessories as your vehicle.”

    Getting Fair Market Value Is Rare

    It’s not realistic to expect that your car will meet one of the stringent fair market value requirements. Only about 5 percent of donated vehicles are suitable for use by charity recipients. About a third of donated cars are junked, and the rest are auctioned off.

    So unless your car is in good or excellent condition, it will most likely be sold at auction or to an auto salvage yard. In that case, your deduction is based on the car’s selling price, not your estimate of its fair market value. And note that this price is not necessarily something you’ll know when you donate the vehicle, or even before the next tax-filing time, since an organization has up to three years to sell your car.

    Getting tax benefits for a donated car requires a lot of documentation, whether the car is junked, sold at auction or given to a charity’s client. IRS Publication 4303 has all the details. Be sure to keep all the papers or electronic files. You’ll need them at tax time.

    If there’s a delay in getting paperwork from the charity, your first option, according to IRS Publication 526, is to file Form 4868. That’s a request for an automatic six-month extension of time to submit your return. Your second option is to file the return on time without claiming the deduction for the qualified vehicle. When the charity finally sends your notification, you can file an amended return using form 1040X to claim the deduction. You’ll have to attach a copy of the notification to your 1040X.

    Another Approach To Car ‘Donation’

    Besides giving your car directly to a charity, there is another way your vehicle can help a charity and also maximize your tax benefits: You can sell the car yourself and donate the proceeds. By doing so, you might be able to generate more cash than if you let the charity sell it.

    Parting with your old vehicle could help a nonprofit carry out its mission and also might make room in your garage for a new car. But how you proceed depends on your goal. If you’re focused on getting rid of a junker with minimal effort and you’d look at the tax deduction as a nice bonus, then donating your car makes good sense. But if your goal is to maximize your tax deduction, carefully review these steps, consult with your tax adviser and then make an informed decision.

Buttle UK gives grants to help with fees at independent or state boarding schools for children and young people who have a boarding need. Buttle UK does not fund day fees.

    The RMF assist GMC registered doctors and their families who have a proven financial need due to little in the way of income or savings.     The Mitchell City of London Charity and Educational Foundation

    We provide a grant for single parent families when the child is over the age of 11 or a bursary for students with one or both parents, where the student is aged 16-18.

    Applicants must already be attending an independent day or boarding school, or state boarding school, and have been at the school for one year. Applicants must also have the Foundation’s City Qualification. That is the child must be attending a City School or either parent must have lived or worked within the City of London, the square mile, for at least five years.

    Volunteer Needed

    We are seeking a volunteer to oversee the food bank 3 times a week (Monday Tuesday and Thursday or Monday, Wednesday ad Thursday). You will need a landline for a small fax machine to connect to (fax supplied by FIND). Duties would be to receive faxes usually by 12.30-12.45 an then open up the food bank at 1.30 in readiness for volunteers to pick up and deliver food parcel referrals to recipients. Also to check that fruit and veg are in good order for the next day and that all fridges and freezers are properly closed and that all lights are switched off in the rooms. Sweep the floors when necessary and remain at the food bank until 2.30 to receive any donations coming in. Lock up on departure. Fuel expenses will be reimbursed if needed.     Volunteers and Drivers Urgently Needed

    Find is looking for volunteers to take part in the Orwell Walk / Run / Cycle on 25 th June 2017 to raise funds for us. If you are interested please visit www.orwellwalk.co.uk and contact us.

    We urgently need drivers who can help deliver food parcels and other supplies on Monday, Tuesday and Friday afternoons. If you can spare one or two days a month, and ideally if you have access to a vehicle, please get in touch . Our delivery teams work in pairs for logistic and safety reasons.

    More than 3,800 food parcels were handed out in 2015 and 1,025 Christmas Hampers were distributed. A huge thank you to volunteers, donors of food and money, and to the local businesses, individuals, churches, schools and groups who made it possible for FIND to help those in need.

    Today, in modern Britain, it is estimated that over 500,000 people are now reliant on food aid – the use of food banks and receipt of food parcels – and this number is likely to escalate further over the coming months [1]. Many families and individuals are struggling to feed themselves and their families because of redundancy, illness, benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown and rising energy costs.

    Families in Need (FIND) Ipswich is a registered charity providing emergency assistance to families or individuals affected by poverty or dispossession in Ipswich and the surrounding area. In the community, we have adults who simply exist from one day to the next and who are desperate for help, including youngsters living on low incomes without life or budgeting skills trying to find ways to feed, clothe and house themselves. 2015 has been, and 2016 continues to be, a desperate year for hundreds of people in our area.     Why the community needs us

    We help those that are deprived of a minimum standard of living, be they single, families, lone parents, children, elderly, sick, disabled or homeless. We offer, free of charge, food, household items, furniture, nursery equipment and nappies, beds and bedding and, when available, cookers, washing machines and refrigerators. When appropriate this includes personal support too.
