Using the software since 2000. They are usually in the 1st wave of EMR software companies that are certified to the latest standards. You get out of it what you put into it. There is so much it can do but you need to make sure your staff is trained and continues to train as rules and regulations change that require software changes. They have a robust community of existing clients who share best practices. Internal reporting is good however the database is open so if you have staff that know SQL you can pretty much get what you want.

Pros

Interoperability – Very easy to send and receive clinical data from other healthcare systems.

Cons

Initial price point is off putting however unlike other EMR products they don’t nickle and dime for every little “feature”

Advice to Others

Ask other folks what they are using. Get on their user forums to see what issues other clients are having.

There are pros and cons with any PM/EHR system on the market today. There is no one perfect solution but NextGen has made great strides to begin listening to their clients and developing their product around client needs. This did not appear to be their methodology in previous years so this shift was most welcomed. The PM side of NextGen has been fairly strong from the beginning and has wide reporting capabilities. The core application side of the EHR is intact. The KBM side of the EHR still needs overhaul in some areas, but the current items in the works show the shift in the right direction.

Pros
Cons

KBM for Behavioral Health is still way behind the current needs.

Advice to Others

Take a look at NextGen. If you purchase, don’t get carried away with customizing early on as it can become a very deep rabbit hole that is hard to climb out of. Try to use the out-of-the-box versions first.

Converting to electronic medical records in general is a long and tedious process. I can’t say NextGen is a bad system to start with, it just still has a ways to go until it’s as efficient as it needs to be for checking in patients, etc. Admittedly, most of the difficulty of using the software was just getting used to a completely new procedure. However, my biggest pet peeve was that there were multiple ways to perform certain tasks and only some of them worked correctly. For example, when adding medications to a patients’ chart, there is a button that says “add medication” but when you click it, it tells you not to use that button because it won’t be able to alert you of allergic reactions, rx interactions, etc. Instead, you need to click another link to view their medication list and then add afterward.

I enjoy the vast amount of customizations that can be made with the templates and allow us to use the application as we need it to work today. With the right staff in place to manage, enhance, and support the NextGen environment, it can prove to be a strong asset to your team.

The biggest issue with NextGen is the size of the company and how large their scope is–meaning the customer service is usually tougher to deal with than the application. Poorly trained tech support agents paint a very bad picture and make me feel like not reporting or getting involved with reporting issues and trying to explain why the application as a break. It appears as agents are encouraged to push everything to IDEAS and avoid reporting a break in the application.

It is a great product from my perspective, I am a Developer and can manage the environment efficiently.

Pros
Cons

poor tech support and response to Known Issues and reporting Known Issues

Advice to Others

1) Have a better response to broken, known issues and train tech support at NextGen to understand Breaks.

2) Grade client support and recognize when clients know more about the application than the off-shore or newly, less experienced tech support–automatically bypass tier 1 support for these clients.
