Get the right help

CSIS Charity Fund s main aim is to give grants and assistance to charities and organisations that support retired and serving civil and public servants and their dependants in times of need, hardship and distress. In keeping with the origins of the charity, the Fund continues to give more direct assistance to the widows of deceased CSIS policyholders.

Spouses and other dependants of CSIS policyholders

Ever since the charity was founded, the Fund has given direct assistance to a small number of widows of deceased CSIS policyholders. A few of our widows have been supported for many years with annual grants, and we know this help is greatly appreciated.

Individuals apply for grants designed to help with costs such essential household bills, replacing white goods, cookers etc and, in rare cases, to help clear debts.

Applicants must have their financial circumstances assessed sometimes we refer cases to charities with which we have close working relationships, such as the Charity for Civil Servants.

This assistance is given on a purely discretionary basis, and must be applied for directly. In 2015, we were able to offer assistance totalling 30,000. It is a real pleasure to help our widows where we can (there are currently no widowers receiving our help), and we keep in regular contact with them to make sure all is well.

Unfortunately, we are too small a charity to handle the casework involved in direct support of the majority of individuals facing hardship. We can however put you in touch with other charities and not-for-profit organisations whose aims mirror our own they may administer grants on our behalf or fund projects aimed at the families of civil and public servants.

Being a job creator is easy! Just follow these three steps.

Step 1: Gather Your Stuff

Walk around your home and collect items you and your family no longer need — that shirt that’s been hanging in the back of your closet for three years, the toy trike your five-year old has outgrown, the holiday gift from grandma you never quite found a place for, etc.

Step 2: Give Them a Look Over

Donating items that are in working condition, contain all of their pieces and parts, and are free of stains and rips is the best way to ensure that your goods do the most good. While we accept most clothing and household items, there are a few things we can’t accept – such as items that have been recalled, banned or do not meet current safety standards. In addition, if you’re looking to donate specialty items such as computers, vehicles or mattresses, it’s best to give your local Goodwill organization a call first to find out any rules or restrictions around these items.

Step 3: Go to Goodwill

Ready to drop off your items? Just use our locator at the top of the page or on our homepage and check the box for “Donation Site” to find your nearest Goodwill drop-off location. Donating a lot of items? Some Goodwills offer donation pickup services – give yours a call to find out what’s available in your area.

Each year, we also get together with our partners to offer unique donation drives, giving you the chance to drop off your items at retail stores, college campuses and more. Stay tuned to this space for information about new opportunities to donate through our partners.

When you donate to Goodwill, you’ve taken the opportunity to become a job creator and make a significant difference in the lives of individuals living in your community. After you drop off your shirts, shoes, blankets, electronics and other items, we sell them in one of our more than 3,200 Goodwill stores or on our online auction site, When someone buys your item, we use that money to fund job training and other services.

Maximizing the value of your donations is important to us. In 2016, we used 87 percent of the revenue generated through your donated stuff to support and grow programs that result in significant social impact for your community members in need of work.

Want to know just how much good your donations are doing? After you drop off your items at Goodwill, use our Donation Impact Calculator [available in the Goodwill locator] to calculate the number of hours of career counseling, on-the-job training, résumé preparation and other services you’ve helped provide.

Your donations are good for the planet as well. Dell Reconnect, a partnership between Goodwill and Dell, has kept more than 324 million pounds of computer electronics out of the landfills since 2004.

And finally, a word of warning: some thrift stores solicit donations under the name of a charity, but as little as five percent of the money generated from these donations may actually go to the charity. Find out more (PDF) about the charities you’d like to support before making a donation.

A piano can offer years of joy, creativity and entertainment for any family. However, sometimes when you buy piano you may find you want to upgrade or you just can’t see yourself ever tickling the ivories and find yourself wanting to give your piano away to someone who would truly enjoy it.

There are lots of wonderful options for those who would like to donate their instrument if you have a ‘used but usable’ piano you’d like to find a good home for but don’t have anyone specific in mind, check first in your own backyard.

Here are some great options:

  • Colleges
  • Private Music Schools
  • Private Dance Studios
  • Nursing Homes
  • Senior Centres
  • Check with a Service Clubs or Community Centres
  • Donation Centres
  • And don’t forget to check even closer to home: there may be someone in your family, a child’s friend, or someone you know at work who could put the instrument to good use.

Important Considerations when Donating a Piano

One important responsibility you have if you’re donating your instrument to a non-profit organization, such as a school, is assessing its condition and establishing a “fair market value.” Donating a less-than-perfect piano is a nice thing to do, even if it needs some repair to be useful, so long as your recipient knows what he or she is getting into. Don’t saddle someone with an unusable instrument just to get it out of the house. To be on the safe (and honest) side, as well as to claim the donation on your taxes, you should have a professional assess the value of your instrument. A piano technician, salesperson, or personal property appraiser with a specialty in pianos would be able to help you.

The good news is when you donate a piano to a qualified non-profit organization, you may be able to receive a deduction off of your income taxes so be sure to ask for a donation tax receipt.

Also, there are two types of donations you can make: restricted and non-restricted. A restricted donation is where you tell the non-profit organization how they can or can’t use the piano. For instance, you may want to donate your piano to a school’s music department, to be used specifically for students. In a non-restricted donation, the non-profit group decides how it should best use the piano. This includes selling or exchanging it for the resources it needs.

Finally, you should think about your own schedule. If you need to move your piano out of its current location by a certain time, then this will pay an important factor in who you donate the piano to.

Once you’ve found a place to donate your piano, it’s a good idea to take a moment to consider the needs of the organization you are donating to. The bottom line for a non-profit organization is that it doesn’t want to accept any donation that becomes a liability. If the cost of moving a piano exceeds the fair market value of the instrument, the donation will create a liability. One way you can make it easy for the non-profit to accept your donation is to pay for the cost of the move. Even if you’re not eager for a lot of publicity or kudos, make it a point to meet the people who will be receiving the piano. Charity Fund

The original Mizrachi Charity Fund was set up many years ago to collect charity funds primarily from the mitpallelim of the various Mizrachi minyanim and distribute them to needy people locally and in Israel. The funds collected were not great but a number of people were assisted in small ways, particularly prior to Pesach each year when the regular collections were augmented by the annual Maot Chittin appeal. This aspect of our charity funds continues even now, but Mizrachi has become more active in recent years.

We now have, in addition to our original fund, another fund to which donations may be claimed as tax deductions. This has increased the attraction to donors who have generously supported this fund and made more funds available for needy people.

The sole objects for which the funds currently exist are to raise and collect funds to be used for the relief of poverty, welfare, maintenance, advancement or education of persons suffering physical and/or economic hardship. Mizrachi Charity Funds distribute funds to a number of people, only some of whom are closely associated with Mizrachi. We operate a Gemach which makes interest free loans to people who need short term assistance to cope with various emergencies that arise from sickness, unemployment and similar misfortunes. We also help some families with rent and food subsidies on a continuing basis, and we have paid for some equipment to help an individual get started in his own business. The largest single distribution of funds is made before Pesach when a number of families are provided with funds to help them prepare for Pesach. Currently about $140,000 passes through the funds each year. Some of this is held as a reserve but most of it is distributed as required. Where necessary and appropriate, the Mizrachi Charity Fund makes contact with social workers and other professionals, with the agreement of the client.

Donations are always welcome and may be made through the Mizrachi office. The funds are supervised by a small management committee, but applications for assistance are handled on a strictly confidential basis. Enquiries, in the first instance, should be directed to Mrs Devora Gold, Mizrachi Charity Fund Administrator, on (03) 8317 2503. Should anyone know of a situation where financial assistance would be useful, they are also invited to make contact.

    Planet Aid s Yellow Clothing Donation Bins Are Part of a Global Cultlike Scam

    Those yellow clothing-collection bins behind your local gas station or convenience store aren’t actually particularly charitable, according to a Reveal investigation. Not only will your donations likely not be helping hungry kids in Africa, they may be directly supporting a Danish international fugitive named Mogens Amdi Petersen.

    Most bins of this type, which have cropped up just about everywhere in recent years, asking you to drop in your used clothes and shoes, don’t do much good for the world’s poor or the environment. Multiple operators of similar bins have come under fire for selling the collected items for profit, rather than donating the clothes or the proceeds. What separates Planet Aid from the pack is the scale of its operation and the bizarre nature of the organization that seems to be behind it.

    Reveal and NBC Washington dug up IRS records showing that Planet Aid makes up to $42 million per year. That money is supposed to be donated to needy communities in places like Malawi and Mozambique. But in an FBI file on Planet Aid’s parent organization also obtained by NBC, investigators wrote that “Little to no money goes to the charities.”

    Planet Aid seems to be controlled by a Danish organization known alternately as Tvind or The Teachers Group, which was founded in the 1970s by a man named Mogens Amdi Petersen. According to Danish court documents, Tvind is a kind of secular, ostensibly humanitarian cult, in which members are instructed to live collectively, “transfer all their available income to joint savings,” and “forgo their personal rights, such as the right to start a family to their own wish.” Petersen himself is an internationally wanted man, having allegedly committed fraud and tax evasion and his home country, and the NBC report speculates that he may be hiding out in a $25 million, 494-acre compound in Baja, Mexico.

    Former Planet Aid employees said Tvind’s cultishness extended to their organization as well. A Maryland woman who responded to a Planet Aid job posting on Craigslist told NBC that she was asked to panhandle for money, work around the clock, and give 20 percent of her $28,000 salary back to the organization to finance a training program at an ominous-sounding facility called One World Center in Michigan.

    Next time you’re looking to donate, avoid the bins and go with one of the many more legitimately humanitarian organizations out there.
