How to Become a Forensic Scientist

Forensic scientists help solve crimes by collecting and analyzing physical evidence and other facts found at the scene. They specifically analyze fingerprints, blood, semen, firearms, saliva, and drugs, and may also reconstruct skeletal bones. In addition, forensic scientists write reports, preserve evidence, testify in court, and discuss evidence collection with attorneys and law enforcement personnel. Often times, the scientific breakdown of evidence is crucial in determining an accused person s guilt or innocence in a crime. Therefore, the role of forensic scientists is vital to the criminal justice process.

Education Requirements

A four-year degree in physics, biology, microbiology, chemistry, medical technology, or genetics, is required in order to obtain an entry-level job in forensic science. Taking classes in law and communication can also be helpful. In addition, experience in a laboratory may be required by some crime labs.

Special Skills

The field of Forensics requires scientists to work with a wide assortment of people, in situations that are often stressful. Because of this, it is crucial that people working in this profession have exceptional people skills. It is also important for forensic scientists to be good speakers and proficient writers as they will be required to write up a number of reports, and may be called upon to witness in court. Lastly, because forensic scientists must be to handle minute pieces of evidence while looking through a microscope, excellent hand-eye coordination is essential.

Salary and Benefits

Most forensic scientists work for federal or state crime laboratories. Because they are primarily government run, some medical and retirement benefits may be paid by these establishments.

On average, beginning forensic scientists working at the state level are paid a monthly salary of about $1,900. Those with previous laboratory experience earn significantly more, up to $3,000 per month. Salaries vary from state to state; but with experience, forensic scientists may eventually earn annual salaries between $35,000 and $50,000.

Working Conditions

Forensic scientists employed by the government are typically able to work a 40-hour work week. However, specific deadlines, and an increasing number of caseloads may require overtime.

Although they spend the majority of their time working a crime lab, forensic scientists are often called to crime scenes in order to examine, analyze, and secure evidence. They may also be asked to testify in court.

Job Outlook for Forensic Science Professionals

Forensic scientists who are skilled and experienced are continuously being sought after. However, because of constant pressure to decrease the amount of funding given to such areas, beginning positions are typically limited, and competition for hire is fierce. Overall outlooks for jobs in this area are fair to moderate.

Forensic Pathology

By: Suzanne Elvidge BSc (hons), MSc (28 Sep 16)

Pathology is the study of disease and its causes. Forensic pathology involves discovering the cause of death, especially in cases where it is sudden or the police suspect that it has not occurred by natural causes. A forensic pathologist is a medical doctor trained in pathology.

Forensic pathology dates back to the 16th century in Europe.

Determining How Someone Died

The first stage is to conduct a post-mortem (also known as an ‘autopsy’). This involves first examining the body and looking at its external appearance to help identification and to begin to determine how the person died – for example looking for evidence of blows, looking at the size, shape and location of wounds such as stab wounds or bullet entry points, or looking for signs of asphyxia.

The pathologist will then begin surgical procedures and study the internal organs to see how external injuries connect to internal injuries, for example bruising of the brain following a head injury, or damage to the heart and blood vessels following a stabbing or shooting, and look for evidence of disease as a cause of death, for example heart attack, stroke, aneurysm or infection.

The stomach contents may provide clues to the time circumstances or cause of death. The forensic pathologist will also look for microscopic changes in the tissues to support these observations.

The autopsy may also include taking samples that may lead to conviction of a murderer or rapist including taking samples from under fingernails, or samples of semen from vaginal swabs.

The pathologist will need to take precautions to protect him or herself and other staff if the victim died of (or with) an infectious disease such as HIV.

The circumstances or state in which the victim was fund can cause problems for the pathologist – for example if the body was found in water, or in a significant state of decomposition.

Determining Why Someone Died

As well as looking at how someone died, the forensic pathologist will determine why he or she died – was it an accident or natural causes, or was it suicide or murder. Sometimes the cause of death remains undetermined.

Forensic pathologists may also have to help identify the dead person, which can include looking at medical records and dental records, especially if the face has been mutilated.

The Working Life

Forensic pathologists may have to give evidence at coroner’s courts and Crown courts, and have to be able to communicate clearly to experts and lay people, including bereaved families.

The pathologist will work with other branches of forensic sciences and medicine and will use the resources of biochemists, pharmacologists, microbiologists and haematologists.

Working as a forensic pathologist can be quite harrowing, and to cope, pathologists have to be able to separate themselves from their cases. This may include developing what seems to be a rather grim sense of humour to outsiders.

Developments In Forensic Pathology

Some forensic pathologists are looking at MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) as an alternative or in addition to autopsy, but it does not seem to offer enough detail.

Rhinoplasty Recovery Time – Downtime After a Nose Job, tip rhinoplasty recovery.#Tip #rhinoplasty #recovery

Rhinoplasty Recovery Time and Downtime?

What is the average rhinoplasty recovery time? When should I expect to be able to go out in public after a nose job, and when will the bandages come off?

Rhinoplasty Recovery

The nose undergoes significant changes in the first 2 to 12 weeks following rhinoplasty. The swelling gradually dissipates over the first several months and thus the appearance of the nose changes gradually.

  • When the cast is removed after one week, the nose will look swollen.
  • Usually by the end of the second week, the swelling and bruising have subsided enough that the casual observer will not readily notice that the nose has been operated on.
  • To the patient, the nose will look swollen or “puffy” for several months.
  • By about 3-4 months, the majority of the swelling will be gone but will look larger in photographs.
  • It can take as long as a year for the final shape to become apparent.
  • You should give yourself several months if if there are any work or social engagements that would cause concern.

Swelling can persist during this time, particularly in the tip and over the area where a boney hump was removed. Following a hump removal during a rhinoplasty, it is very common for there to be excessive swelling over the central portion of the nasal bridge overlying the area where the boney hump was removed. This area often appears more swollen that the rest of the bridge and can remain swollen for several months. As a result, patients frequently worry that the bump will be permanent.

Taping the bridge of the nose and the supratip area (area above the tip) can significantly reduce postoperative edema (swelling). Gentle pressure from the tape does two things. First, it can help ‘press’ out some of the swelling that results from trapped fluid in the tissues. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, pressure on the tissues causes the collagen fibers in scar tissue to become more organized, which reduces the volume of the swollen area.The most effective for taping is in the first six months after surgery. You should still get a benefit even if you havent started taping until 2 months after surgery.

It is very common for rhinoplasty patients to report (in the first several weeks after surgery) that their upper lip feels stiff and that it is difficult for them to smile. Fortunately, this resolves by itself in the first several weeks after surgery as the swelling subsides. Be patient, your smile should return to normal.

Bruising and swelling are a normal part of rhinoplasty recovery. They are dependent on several factors related to both the surgical technique and the patient. Techniques that increase bruising and swelling include whether or not the nasal bones were broken (osteotomies), the extent of soft tissue dissection/elevation from the bony-cartilaginous framework, and whether the surgery was performed open or closed. Patient factors include age, skin thickness, nutrition, bleeding tendencies/disorders, and medications that thin the blood.

Obviously, not many of these variables are within the control of the patient; however the extent of the bruising and the severity of swelling can be minimized by following these tips:

  • Avoid any medications that thin the blood for a minimum of 2 weeks before surgery and do not resume them until your physician directs you to. These medications include (but are not limited to): aspirin, ibuprofen, anti-inflammatories, heparin, lovenox, coumadin, plavix.
  • Avoid multivitamins/herbal remedies/teas etc that contain high levels of Vitamin E, Ginseng, Ginko — these can cause you to bleed more freely.
  • If you have a tendency to bleed or bruise easily, have a history of a bleeding disorder, or have a family member with a bleeding disorder, you should discuss this with your physician before surgery.
  • Ice packs to applied to the cheeks for the first 48 hours
  • Keep you head elevated higher than your heart. This will help minimize the amount of edema (swelling).
  • Avoid smoking
  • Herbal supplements such as bromelin, papaya extract, and arnica may be of benefit, but few studies have proven their effectiveness.
  • Sun exposure in the first several months following rhinoplasty can cause the skin of the nose to become red or “splotchy”. It can also predispose you to getting sunburned more easily. For the first several months after rhinoplasty, patients should wear sunscreen and/or a hat to prevent the above mentioned problems.

Surgeons frequently place an external splint on the exterior of the nose after surgery. The casta can help preserve the operative result and also can aid in reducing swelling. Most surgeons leave the cast in place for one week.

SQL – CREATE TABLE Statement #copy #table #in #sql

#

SQL CREATE TABLE

In a relational database, data is stored in tables. Given that there is no way for the database vendor to know ahead of time what your data storage needs are, you will for sure need to create tables that fit your needs in the database. Therefore, the CREATE TABLE statement is one of the most fundamental components of SQL.

Before we dive into the SQL syntax for CREATE TABLE. it is a good idea to understand what goes into a table. A table is made up of rows and columns. Each row represents one piece of data, and each column can be thought of as representing a component of that piece of data. For example, if we have a table for recording customer information, then the columns may include information such as First Name, Last Name, Address, City, Country, and Birth Date. As a result, when we specify a table, we include the column headers and the type of data for each column. We may also decide to place certain limitations, or constraints, to guarantee that the data stored in the table makes sense.

The SQL syntax for CREATE TABLE is

CREATE TABLE table_name
( column 1 data type for column 1 [column 1 constraint(s)],
column 2 data type for column 2 [column 2 constraint(s)],
.
[table constraint(s)] );

Column 1 and column 2 represent the name of each column. After the name, we specify the data type for that column. Typical data types include integers (such as 1), real numbers (such as 0.55), strings (such as sql ), date/time expressions (such as 2000-JAN-25 03:22:22 ), and binary types. Different relational databases allow for different data types. so please consult with a database-specific reference first.

The [ ] symbol means that the phrase inside it may occur zero, one, or more times. When creating a table, specifying column and table constraints is optional, and each column and each table may have more than one constraint.

Six types of constraints can be placed when creating a table:

  • NOT NULL Constraint . Ensures that a column cannot have NULL value.
  • DEFAULT Constraint . Provides a default value for a column when none is specified.
  • UNIQUE Constraint . Ensures that all values in a column are different.
  • CHECK Constraint . Makes sure that all values in a column satisfy certain criteria.
  • Primary Key Constraint . Used to uniquely identify a row in the table.
  • Foreign Key Constraint . Used to ensure referential integrity of the data.

    To create a customer table with the fields specified in the second paragraph above, we would type in

    CREATE TABLE Customer
    (First_Name char(50),
    Last_Name char(50),
    Address char(50),
    City char(50),
    Country char(25),
    Birth_Date datetime);

    No constraints were specified in the above SQL statement. What if we want to add a constraint that says the default country is ‘United States’? In other words, if no data is entered for the “Country” column, it would be set to ‘United States.’ In that case, we would type the following SQL:

    CREATE TABLE Customer
    (First_Name char(50),
    Last_Name char(50),
    Address char(50),
    City char(50),
    Country char(25) default ‘United States’,
    Birth_Date datetime);

    Sometimes the table structure we need is the same as another table in the database. In this case, we can also use CREATE TABLE to make a copy of the table structure so we do not need to type all the column names, data types, and constraints in detail. The syntax for doing this is:

    CREATE TABLE table_name AS
    [SQL Statement];

    To copy both the structure and data of Table1 into Table2. we would issue the following SQL statement:

    CREATE TABLE Table2 AS SELECT * FROM Table1;

    To copy the structure of Table1 into Table2 without any data, we would issue the following SQL statement:

    CREATE TABLE Table2 AS SELECT * FROM Table1
    WHERE 0 = 1;

    The WHERE 0 = 1 clause is always false. Therefore, no row of data will be copied from Table1 to Table2. Only the table structure is copied over.

    SQL – User personalization #user #personalization

    #

    As you state yourself, this is definitely not the best solution (think of very spooky scenarios ). However, considering you made up your mind, one method would be to create a SqlCommand and populate it’s .CommandText with variables using a concated string.

    A very quick dirty example to demonstrate this would be:

    private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
    <
    // Run the command:
    RunCustomSqlCommand( * , TABLE_NAME , TRONCO , = , 3 );

    // This executes the following query: select * from TABLE_NAME where TRONCO = 3
    >

    private void RunCustomSqlCommand(string selectWhat, string selectFrom, string whereWhat, string whereOperator, string whereEquals)
    <
    // Define your user’s query:
    string sqlCommandText = select + selectWhat;
    sqlCommandText += from + selectFrom;
    sqlCommandText += where + whereWhat + + whereOperator + + whereEquals;

    // Create a new SqlCommand:
    SqlCommand sqlCmd = new SqlCommand();
    sqlCmd.CommandText = sqlCommandText;
    sqlCmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;

    // Run the command. etc.
    Console.WriteLine(sqlCommandText);
    >

    Get the idea? Again, this is not recommended and the above snippet is just to illustrate one method to achieve this. This is also especially dangerous with WebForms (oh, the security horrors!). Perhaps a way of filtering the data before the command is executed would be more acceptable?

    Monday, August 27, 2007 8:08 PM

    Hum. Let me tell you the scenario..so you can get a better Idea.

    We have 50 clients. and in each client we have a serial logger running storing it’s records in a ODBC database.

    Every hour a job run for every client sending to a SQL Server(temporary table. ) only the registry that was not sent on the hour before. (untill here no problem. )

    OBS: Only the support guys that installed the serial logger knows the condition of each client. so he will have to configure this once(when a new client is set). (and very rarely change it). These condition vary in many ways. and the only way that I see to store it is in this way.

    OK Five minutes after that process has finished another job on the server will run every hour and will get the condition to the client that it’s analyzing at the moment and then filter registries that match that condition to send it to the final table, so the system can use the registries.

    I think that now it’s more clearly how I have to use.

    Monday, August 27, 2007 8:19 PM

    Sorry, but I still haven’t got a clue on what you want to achieve. Do you want some input on how to store these frequently changing operator/value pairs, or do you want an efficient way for the user (support guy?) to actually change these values?

    If it is the latter, perhaps you mean something like a webmethod that would Get + Set the changing pairs?

    Monday, August 27, 2007 8:52 PM

    I want easy way to the user mount the where condition. and a easy way(store the SQL where condition, and then run) to the program run a query with that condition.
