What Percent of Church Giving Can Be Taken Off Federal Taxes? TurboTax Tax Tips

What Percent of Church Giving Can Be Taken Off Federal Taxes?

When you prepare your federal tax return, the IRS allows you to deduct the donations you make to churches. If your church operates solely for religious and educational purposes, your donation will qualify for the tax deduction. As long as you itemize your deductions, you can generally claim 100 percent of your church donations as a deduction.

Itemized deduction requirement

The donations you make to your church throughout the year can be deducted from your taxes only if you itemize your expenses on Schedule A when you file your personal tax return. To use Schedule A, your total itemized deductions must exceed the standard deduction for your filing status. If the standard deduction provides a greater tax benefit, your church donations won’t offer any additional tax savings. However, you can deduct those donations in any of the next five tax years that you choose to itemize deductions.

Limitations on annual church donations

The total of your church donations plus all other charitable contributions you make during the year cannot exceed 50 percent of your adjusted gross income (AGI). If it does, then you cannot deduct 100 percent of your donations in the current tax year. However, the amounts you can’t deduct this year can be used as a deduction on one of your next five tax returns.

Donating cash to a church

The IRS has various record-keeping and documentation requirements, depending on the amount of cash you donate to a church. Whenever you make a cash donation to your church, you must retain either a receipt, canceled check or a bank or credit card statement. It’s not necessary for you to send these to the IRS, but if the agency ever contacts you for proof of your donations, you are required to have the documentation. However, if any single donation is greater than $250, you must also obtain a written acknowledgment from the church. This acknowledgment should include the donation amount, a description of any goods or services provided to you in exchange for your donation and a statement that the remaining benefit you receive is an intangible religious one. If you do receive goods or services in the exchange, you must reduce your deduction by their value.

Donating property to a church

When you donate property to a church, the tax laws require you to assess the fair market value of each item. You may choose any valuation method, as long as it gives a reasonable estimate of the price a buyer would pay for similar property on the open market. For example, it is reasonable to obtain an independent appraisal on a precious stone you donate to the church; providing your own estimate without having any knowledge of gems is not an acceptable valuation method. As long as your estimate is reasonable, you can still claim a deduction for 100 percent of the value.

TurboTax has a tool called ItsDeductible that can help you determine the IRS-approved value of your charitable donations.

ATM, Debit and Credit Card Processing for Churches #kids #charities

#church donations

#

This Site allows individuals to make a variety of electronic donations to their church. We provide three donation payment methods:

  • Electronic Checks or Electronic Funds Transfer.
  • Credit Cards
  • Debit Cards

On-line debit and credit card donors do not have to be registered to donate, however their church must have an account with MyChurchDonations. For security purposes, donations by Electronic Checks do require donor registration. Registration is free, secure, and has the added benefit of an online account ledger. The accounting ledger includes all methods of donations. All registered donors can receive an online accounting of all their donations any time they wish.

Click Here to become a Registered Donor to use Electronic Checks or to have your own account ledger listing all of your donations.

If you are unsure if your church has an existing account enabling them to receive your electronic payment, click here and enter the name of your church in the search form.

MyChurchDonations is no longer processing credit or debit card donations. After 16 years of providing donation services to churches and donors we have closed the site. Accounting functions will continue to be available to church administrators for a period of time.

Suggestions for
Implementation

For Churches and Organizations

MyChurchDonations makes it easy and economical for Churches to accept electronic donations for offerings, tithe, and other gifts. Your members and visitors can easily return their tithes and offerings with their ATM, Debit, and Credit Cards by completing a simple authorization form. They can then place the form in the offering plate or give it to the church office.

Your donors can also make their financial contribution to your church from their home or office at their convenience. They simply go on-line with MyChurchDonations and make their preferences known. The donation is then processed with full accounting and deposited into your church bank account. Registered donors can have access to their own donation history and the church office will have an accounting of all donations made to your church.

Online donations can also be made by Electronic Checks. This is the most economical method that allows donors to contribute online. It eliminates the handling of checks and envelopes and minimizes the accounting for your office.

Your church’s Website can also include a Link to our online donation page setup specifically for your church. A custom link on your web page opens a separate window so donors can make online gifts to your church without leaving your church’s Website.

Churches that partner with MyChurchDonations provide their parishioners and visitors the additional donation options of using Electronic Checks, ATM, debit, or credit cards. All of these benefits without having to establish a costly merchant account and buy or lease expensive equipment.

If you are a Church Administrator and would like to:

  • Increase donor options while making it more convenient for members to give.
  • Multiply church donations and improve cash flow.
  • Respect the preferences of donors who desire additional giving options.

    What Churches are Saying

ChurchBuzz allowed us to truly polish and professionalize our website. Before we began using Churchbuzz we had members of the church working on the website as volunteers, which sometimes worked but mostly did not. When we went with Churchbuzz the professionalism increased dramatically, and very, very quickly. As Senior Pastor of a church with over 1000 members and 400 in Sunday worship, located in an old suburban now urban environment, I have learned that guests find us first over the web. Having a professional website is not just helpful, it’s critical in our day and time. I am very pleased with Churchbuzz.”

As senior pastor of Lake Cities United Methodist Church in the Dallas area, I can wholeheartedly report that Patrick and his ministry at ChurchBuzz have greatly enhanced the visibility of the church by its website. The number of first-time visitors has dramatically increased. Reports indicate that 9 and out 10 visitors discover the church through its website.

Our nightmare of a website can now be updated simply and easily by almost anyone on our staff. Patrick has been a gift in more ways than I can express. I highly recommend him to anyone who has need of website expertise.

    Council Statistics

To help raise awareness NHSBT works with partners to reach our target audiences through their staff, customers and public networks. NHSBT plan to work with local authorities to increase donation rates in their communities and have published blood and organ donation statistics for every council area to support local action plans.

Last year we worked successfully with Newham Council. Together, we helped increase Newham registrations to the Organ Donor Register by 332%. NHSBT would very much like to see other councils stepping forward to work with us, so that together, we can save and improve even more lives.

Please click here to see NHSBT statistics by council area.

    English Parliamentary Constituency Statistics

We believe that MPs can play a key role in helping to raise awareness of the importance of donation, and of the difference an act such as giving blood or joining the NHS Organ Donor Register can make in saving and improving lives.

We have therefore published statistics for the number of blood and organ donors by constituency area, to support local awareness raising activities. Please click here to see these statistics.

Toolkit for MPs to encourage black and South Asian communities to register as donors

NHSBT have developed a toolkit for MPs to encourage their constituents from black and South Asian communities to become blood and organ donors. The toolkit contains local statistics. template press releases, example blog posts and ideas for visits and events.

    Need a Sperm Donor?

Hunter IVF provides a sperm donation program to help heterosexual couples, same sex couples and single women successfully conceive their baby.

You can use sperm donated by someone you know, or by someone who has made a de-identified donation directly to our clinic. As part of IVFAustralia we can provide patients with access to a pool of potential de-identified donors, including donors recruited from both Australia and overseas.

    The first step

The first step is a consultation with a fertility specialist who will discuss the process, assess the health of the woman or couple seeking the donation, and arrange any preliminary testing that is needed.

The couple (or single woman/women if applicable) will then need to meet with a counsellor and discuss the long term implications of treatment using donated sperm.

The next step is to choose a donor that will be suitable for you. If you do now have a known donor you will be given access to our password protected sperm donor programme website. This site holds a database of all the donors that are currently available to choose from.

You will be able to view questionnaires that have been completed by the donors about themselves and their family.

Once you have decided on a donor and liaised with our donor manager to confirm the donation you will be ready to commence your cycle with your fertility specialist.

Contact us to find out more about using donor sperm.

    Using donor sperm from overseas

Hunter IVF has always maintained a high calibre of locally recruited donors, however there has been a shortage of local donors. Now as part of IVFAustralia, we can provide patients with access to international donors as IVFAustralia has an agreement with an overseas clinic to allow our patients to access overseas recruited donors as well.

This arrangement meets Australia’s highest ethical standards. IVFAustralia adheres to practices developed by the Reproductive Technology Committee (RTAC) of the Fertility Society of Australia (FSA).

The recruitment and counselling process for clinic-recruited donors complies fully with the national ethical standards set out by the Australian Health Ethics Committee of the National Health and Medical Resource Council (NHMRC), and the requirements of the 2007 NSW Assisted Reproductive Technology Act, and 2009 Regulations for this Act.

What’s the difference between American and Australian donors

The American donors are recruited for us by an agency based in Seattle. Accordingly, the recruitment expenses are higher for an American donor than for an Australian donor.

However, the US donors are all still participating on the same ethical basis as the Australian donors. In other words, there is no payment of donors other than reasonable expenses. The same limit on the number of families created still applies and American donors will, like the Australian donors, release their identifying information to be available to the children later.

The access fees on top of each cycle you use donor sperm are:

    • American Donor access fee – $950.00
    • Australian Donor access fee – $600.00.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about our current donors please phone 1800 111 483 or Email Us .

As a patient of Hunter IVF you will be given access to a secure website that provides details of the donor profiles for your consideration and selection. You will be able to view questionnaires written by our donor about them and their families.

    How does sperm donation work?

All our donors, whether they are recruited locally or overseas, undergo rigorous preparation for donation, including:

Medical Screening: Thorough medical history, including family and genetic history; tests for HIV, Hepatitis B C, HTLV I II, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Chromosomes, blood group, Rhesus antibodies and full blood count.

Genetic testing: performed to screen for cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, and others depending on ethnic background.

Quarantine: All donors sperm is quarantined for 3 to 6 months, and donors are re-screened for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, HTLV I II and syphilis prior to release for treatment.

Counselling: donors and their partners spend time with our counsellors to consider the legal, psychological and implications of donation. All donors consent to have their identifying information entered to the NSW Central Donor Register, so children born from donation can access it once they turn 18.

Family Limit: All donors are only able to help create five families worldwide. As we reserve one family for our donor, we can only allow four women access to a donor at any time.

Once the donor sperm is released from quarantine, the recipient’s eggs can then be fertilised using either IUI (interuterine insemination) or IVF treatment with ICSI .

Who can be a sperm donor?

Healthy men aged between 25 and 50 can donate directly to Hunter IVF as a sperm donor. If you have a relative or friend who can donate and is over 50, we can make exceptions to this age limit.

Contact us to find out more about using donor sperm.
